• The conventions of real media text in your 1st and 2nd year productions.
• Using medium specific vocabulary and generic conventions/narrative conventions.
AS PROJECT • Builds tension – in my opening sequence the fact that you can’t see the villain following the protagonist builds up the tension and suspense of what is going to happen next. • Danger- in my opening sequence, danger I shown when the protagonist walks down an abandoned alley way by herself. • Horror- In my opening sequence I used conventions of a horror film, the anonymous villan and innocent protagonist.
A2 PROJECT • True to life- for my film trailer we had tried to make it seem as realistic as possible, young teenagers in this age range would be able to relate to the happenings that are shown in the trailer. • Struggle – in my opening sequence we represented struggle by showing the arguing and standing on a street corner.
1(a) Describe how your analysis of the conventions of real media texts informed your own creative media practice. Refer to a range of examples in your answer to how these skills developed over time.
A big figure of generic codes and conventions in real media texts influenced me and helped me creative both my Foundation and Advanced Portfolio’s. A significant amount of codes and conventions are shown in my As project (Foundation Portfolio), to generate ideas for this opening sequence I had looked up different types of horror movies, trailers, posters and magazines. The first film that I researched was ‘scream’. Scream, I thought personally, was a good film to research because of the conventions of a horror film that it consists of. As much as building up tension, the director also wanted to make something that maybe individuals could relate to. It influenced us in the making of our opening sequence because our idea was similar in the sense that it was about a young girl being stalked by an anonymous villain, we found that this would build up the tension and suspense and this is one of the codes and conventions of as horror film. The opening sequence didn’t include narrative of our protagonist on the phone, and the heavy breathing of the stalker this again would create suspense.
1a) Describe how you need to write about your work for the foundation portfolio and Advance portfolio units you may refer to other media production work you have undertaken. A real media convention of a real media text need skill, creative and practice through the two project foundation and advance portfolio. Creating a blog Creating open sequences of a short film Short trailer All this creation inquired skills and more to the technology for the real media convention and also advance portfolio. One of the most technologies used in both project for the opening sequences and the trailer is the final cut pro, this help to create the slow motion, effect, sound track and the editing for the both sequences. When it come to creating foundation and advance portfolio, I focus on one thing that the production needs mostly are creativity and research. Foundation portfolio is the start of media production from AS project work. Creating the blog first get your work open for people feedback and comment and to carry out all the production work well as one. The audience research as well on the media production help to know the audience idea, what they want or like or their own opinion about the creation to make all ideas come together as one and get to know what your audience want and what to produce in terms of opening sequences film and also type of genre film they love to watch either drama, horror or creepy opening sequences. Foundation portfolio is the start of media production and it gets higher by the primary and secondary research. Foundation portfolios as make me get to know the start of media production from the technology to the research and to the text analysis. Technology in media production goes along with the production and without technology media work can’t come out in a good way. Technologies like the Mac, final pro cut and camera. My research in As portfolio was into two part secondary research and primary research. This include my research in some trailer which I watch and analyse with my audience research also by inviting them to the camera and also asking them some question by text and some social media (face book and YouTube) writing some question on the social media asking my friends as the audiences what they think about the ideas I brought out and also the YouTube which I upload some audiences research and to listen other people ideas. My advance portfolio is the higher than the foundation portfolio, this makes me get to know more about the first production which get me to work around and also called myself as a media producer. My A2 production gave me a lot of headache because it gets tough and this is because you have to bring out some new ideas to the audience because there are many people on the media field production. My work on A2 production is more to call media production, because all the work was done from short film trailer, front cover of the film I make to magazine and also poster and lastly the film Evaluation. All this production takes me up too weeks and the help of some secondary research and I look at the empire magazine front cover for example for my own magazine. I used Photoshop for creating my own magazine cover and poster. The short film trailer which I work as cameraman, I get the idea from one of the best film ever inception. All this work from AS to A2 production as make me understand media production to some certain level.
Both my foundation and advance portfolio I started with planning and research for my media product. For the planning I need to know what camera I was going to use and with that the angles and shots. For the foundation portfolio I had to film an opening sequence and for advance portfolio. For the As production during filming we filmed our media product in a old burnt down house this was a good location for our horror production as we were aiming at the genre of young teenagers . We also changed the lighting dark to make it seem isolated. By filming the opening sequence like this it made editing a lot easier. For my A2 advance portfolio we had aimed our work at the same generation and conformed to the conventions of horror. My skills from the production of my A2 work contributed to the authenticity of my product. A significant amount codes and conventions went into both my media productions to generate all of these conventions I started by making a blog which I called foundation portfolio where I saved all my research of all my work. I had started to film a short film opening sequence this helped with my creating skills. For my media production to have all the typical codes and conventions I had researched different horror films. Each film I looked at had different functions to a conventional horror. When I was making my foundation and advance portfolio i had to get together different ideas with lot research and had to look into different films to see what was continued in them all and how they twist was revealed. This was done by using YouTube and Google images where I saw different conventional horror films.
1a) My analysis of the conventions of real media texts informed my own creative media practice because it allowed me to follow the typical conventions of my genre which was a supernatural horror. The typical conventions of a supernatural horror are someone is posessed and they can over come this by using religion which is christianity.
Describe How Your Analysis of the Coventions of Real Media Texts Informed Your Own Creative Media Practice. Refer To A Range of Examples In Your Answers To Show How These Skills Developed Over Time.
An understanding of conventions of other similar media products proved to be a vital part in both my foundation and advanced portfolio’s. My foundation portfolio consisted of a horror opening sequence and my advances portfolio consisted of a movie teaser trailer, a poster and magazine cover.
My advanced portfolio consisted of more conventional elements which we included due to the research we did into the horror genre. However, my foundation opening sequence did not have as many conventional elements as it was our first production and our advanced portfolio allowed us to consider and include more detail compared to our past production.
For our opening sequence, our mise-en-scene did not comply with codes and conventions too much, this is why we focused on sound and editing to further represent real media products. The music we used was intense and creepy, suggesting the genre and intentions of characters to the audience; this is similar to the other teen horrors such as Scream during the lead up to a killing.
Final cut pro allowed us to change the colouring of our shot, allowing us to change to greyscale and create a more daunting effect, relating to the genre of our opening sequence.
The location was in the college, this is seen in many teen horror movies which is following the conventions and illustrates the characters age group, furthermore identifying their vulnerability. Teenagers are the most common victims in horrors such as; scream, I know what you did last summer, final destination etc, which is why we used this element in both our media products. Despite the narrative, teenagers always have a higher vulnerability and are a good connection for the audience to relate to as they would be teenagers themselves or possibly have children who are of that age, increasing the suspense.
